Honorable Mention To a granddaughter Janis (Carole MacRury) In this, my fifth decade, I awake from sleep a drowsed bee drunk on pollen; begin to feast on fresh figs, listen to the sound of green rubbing against green, hear a world, echoed, in the hollow ping of a raindrop striking a metal eave. Unlike Poe, I ignore the omen of black wings, hear “all’s well, forevermore’, in the throaty vowel sounds of a raven’s call. I lift the skirts of life; observe the earthy rootwad of fallen giants; the rot of nurse logs, heartwood softening to sprout saplings and a new green fuzz of fern. And I cradle you close, my daughter’s firstborn, my tiny Pallas Athene. We are so fully alive, yet I acquiesce to my death knowing you wear the shape of my lips and carry a trace of my seed.
